Chartered in 1656, Bridgewater is less than 30 square miles, and lies along the Taunton River. For most of the 1800s and beginning of the 1900s, Bridgewater's economy was largely dependent on the factories located within the town. Bridgewater is known for its iron works factories and is home to Bridgewater Iron Works, a registered historical site in Massachusetts.
Bridgewater is a growing community and serves as home to Bridgewater State University (BSU). BSU is one of the first teaching schools in America. Founded in 1840, BSU boast 38 buildings on the 278 acre campus. It is a premier public university of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with over 90 area of academics study to choose from. BSU has over 95 student clubs and organizations, and over 50,000 alumni.
