Perhaps the most famous of the Newport Mansions, The Breakers is an Italian Renaissance Vanderbilt mansion constructed 1893-1895.
The Breakers is a Vanderbilt mansion located on Ochre Point Avenue in Newport. It is owned and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County and open to the public for tours. The Breakers was built as a Newport summer home to Cornelius Vanderbilt II, of the wealthy Vanderbilt family. It was constructed between 1893 and 1895 in an Italian Renaissance style. The 70 room mansion encompasses 138,300 square feet of space on five floors.
